Keyword research is an easy topic to overcomplicate. It’s actually pretty simple, once you’ve decided on the niche that you want to get into, pull up the Google Keyword Planner and start putting together a list. You need to pick out 5-10 main keywords that you’ll use for you shop and base your name around. There should be a large foundational keyword that you base your business on, and then smaller sub keywords.
Handmade Jewelry is a foundational keyword with 14,800 searches per month, whereas dog tag necklaces is a great sub keyword with only 1,300 searches per month.
Your foundational keyword and your long tail keywords do not have to have specific search volumes to qualify, it’s best to keep the foundational keyword above 1,000 searches per month, and the sub keywords above 100.
The sub keywords should all be related and feed back to the foundational keyword.
You wouldn’t want your foundational keyword to be “handmade jewelry” and your sub keyword to be “dresses for girls”. They aren’t very related.

Here is a good keyword layout for a handmade jewelry shop.

• handmade jewelry – 14,800

Sub Keywords

• ear jackets – 3,600

• dog tag necklaces – 1,300

• energy bracelets – 590

• brass bracelets – 480

• heart shaped pendants – 110
